Self In the Digital World
In human history, a lot of events affect the progress of a race or a planet. These events are unpredictable and unimaginable, such as the birth of human civilization or the advent ofcomputers, those events we call Singularity points. As technology continues to leap forward, the occurrence of singularity points is times more often than passes. When I live in this era ofcontinuous technological innovation, I am also constantly changing mentally. However, myattitude to social contact and values is constantly being affected in the ever-changingenvironment.
Nowadays, technology development is like a rolling kaleidoscope, it has great changes that have been taking place inside. Technology has become a part of my life that makes me feel like a native creature in the digital world. I can feel myself rapidly starting tofollow the trend. This is how it feels to be a digital native. The experience of returning to China two years ago gave me the convenience of developing a digital life. At the same time, I also felt that my thinking ability was gradually degrading. At that time, AR technology became very common. It was an auxiliary technology that relied on intelligent recognition.
People use it in different fields such as scanning payment or translating text. To give an example, when I was helping my cousin learn English in China, I was stunned when I discovered that he was using a smart device to scan the English text for progressive translation. The deciphering speed of smart devices is amazing. When I use a mobile phone to translate, I only need to turn on the camera to scan the text to get an accurate translation. I never thought I would adapt to this fast translation software so quickly. But after a month of completely relying on smart translation, I discovered that the seriousness of the problem was that I gradually gave up on letting myself think independently and let smart foundry work. In other words, I can complete the learning task quickly but it does nhelp me internaot lize knowledge . There is no doubt that technology has simplified my life, but in some ways, it has made us lose the ability to think deeply.
The popularity of technology and the Internet has changed my manner into cool and aloof. The popularity of the online world has gradually reduced my empathy. People spend too much time communicating with each other through virtual characters. For example, at a high school graduation party, even if my friends and I are physically close, we still use social software for some of the communication. It has become the norm for people to talk through virtual images. It’s like people wearing such masks and communicating with each other. Therefore, others read the face from our mask and what we understand is also from the mask of others. So it becomes difficult for people to understand each other. The Internet is full of moral kidnapping and online violence. It seems that any comment on the Internet may trigger a war because under the mask we are no longer responsible for our language. This is a manifestation of the lack of communication insociety. On the other hand, developingt echnology applies great psychological grat ification toin dividuals, whichleadsto communication becoming less important in the crowd. For example, our lives depend on different technologies, such as mobile phones or computers, which can effectively help people obtain any information from all over the world. Therefore, people are more satisfied in the online world than in physical communication. Unfortunately, the technological dependence that changes the digital age cannot be passed. When I no longer need to getsatisfaction from communication, I often appear cool and aloof.
Digital devices are isolating me in society and making me addicted to them. I never realized that in the digital world, the empathy between me and those around me is gradually changing. An MIT professor, Sherry Turkle says, “In the past thirty years there has been a 40% decline in all the ways that we know how to measure empathy-- among each other, for each other, among college students”. The lack of empathy makes us accustomed to self-isolation in society and reduced people’s motivation to communicate. For instance, I have attended a meeting for freestyle dancers, there is an audience was showed great enthusiasm at the party, he shows his passion for our dance and then he expressed his great desire to learn about dancing. Then the audience got our contact information at the end of the party and followed each other on social software. That looks like a great beginning for him to start dancing study. However, that meeting at the party is the last time I saw him. it is very interesting that we never said a word after becoming friends on social software. This sudden indifference made me very surprised. At the same time, it made me wonder if the enthusiasmhe shows to me was false? Turkel's statement about the loss of empathy in society is correct,my communication with the outside world becomes unreal under the mask of social software. I can my empathy is decreasing.
结论
The singularities of technology keep appearing around us, and it constantly pushes meto adapt to the new environment. Sometimes I feel that I am no longer as full of emotion as before, and become following the trend. But I have not lost my feelings towards my friends and lovers because of this. However, this is a small part of our composite personality just like Sherry Turkle said we understand we do not and cannot know things completely, not the outside world and not ourselves. It means our knowledge of the outside world and ourselves is incomplete. My lack of self-knowledge makes us tend to follow others. In this era, I may be affected to varying degrees, but in the process, I will continue to enrich my self-cognition and accept the arrival of new singularities.
